Itís a wonder that Abraham held on like he did. In Genesis 12, God promises ďI will make of you a great nation.Ē Then, almost twenty-five years and no children later, God tells Abra ham, ďYou shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations.Ē Actually, Abraham DID give up on God. He had a son by Hagar eleven years after the first promise. So, seeing that Abra hamís patience had worn out, why did God not intervene then? Why didnít he have some thing to say to Abraham then, instead of waiting another thirteen years? Of course, our over-riding theme in all of this is Abrahamís faith in God, but it would seem that that faith faltered when he fathered a son by Hagar. And Godís timing in all of this seems a bit sus pect.
