Lesson from the Gospels: Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26

In the call of Matthew Jesus reveals that his mission is to call not "the righteous, but sinners." In the healing of the woman with an issue of blood and the raising of the official's daughter, Jesus' ministry beyond Israel is declared.

Abraham and Sarah entertain heavenly visitors. One of them tells Sarah she will bear a son; her response is laughter.

Lesson from the Epistles: Romans 5:1-8

Sermon: "Granting Authority"

Text: Matthew 9:35-10:23

Jesus tells his disciples that "laborers" are needed to meet the need of the people to know God's salvation. The twelve disciples are named and sent out to the "lost sheep" of Israel to "heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, and cast out demons."

June 22--Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

Lesson from the Hebrew Scriptures: Genesis 21:8-21

At Sarah's insistence, Abraham drives Ishmael and his mother Hagar to wander in Beersheba. On the point of death, they are both delivered by God.

Lesson from the Epistles: Romans 6:1b-11

Paul tells the Romans that they have been baptized into Christ's death and have received newness of life as they will share in his resurrection. Therefore, they are "dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus."

Sermon: "The Cost of Discipleship"

Text: Matthew 10:24-39

Jesus teaches that God loves even the least significant living things. He then posits: how much more loved are God's servants? The good news is such that the disciples are called to "proclaim it upon the housetops."
